EXAMINATION AND EVALUATION

Examination can be taken each semester basis and scripts evaluation time will be taken 2-3 months long. Results will be published via GEPEA Website and notify to the respective student via E-mail.

GEPEA EUROPE, maintains several type of Examination & Answer Scripts evaluation process which are as follows:

1     TUTOR MARKED ASSIGNMENT (TMA) – TMA BY LEARNERS TO GEPEA EXAM OFFICE/ COURSE TUTOR.

QUESTIONAIRRE TYPE: The exams type in distance education are conducted online and generally includes 1. CASE STUDIES/STUDY ASSIGNMENTS, 2. Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA), 3. Short Essay/Report writing, 4. Short or Long Response Questions 5. MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions).

2.   OPEN BOOK EXAM (OBE): An “open book examination or OBE is that in which students are allowed to refer to either class notes and summaries or a “memory aid”, textbooks, or other approved material while answering questions.

Note: “Openbook exams are not always an easy option. Answering the questions well requires more than just copying information straight from texts. For example, having access to a textbook can stop you from giving a wrong answer if you can’t remember a fact or formula, but just getting that fact correct won’t get you good marks”. But don’t fear to give the correct and best answer according to your knowledge. The passing rate/percentage is higher for those who are answering in the scripts rather than non-answering students. So, we encourage our students to write something appropriate according to the best of your knowledge & understanding in the answer scripts rather than keeping blanks. For example, CPA Australia, University of Oxford, UK (Hilary Term Exams, Trinity Term Exams) takes open book exams.

How GEPEA will be conducting OBE (Open Book Exams)?

Apart from email and messages or GEPEA website platforms, GEPEA will use apps like WhatsApp, Skype, etc. to send information. As per pre-schedule students will get access to question papers, GEPEA will email or WhatsApp or Skype It, while students will two hours to answer the paper and they will have one hour for downloading question papers and uploading the answer sheet via online medium. So, total of three hours’ time will be allocated. Students are allowed to refer to either class notes and summaries or a “memory aid”, textbooks, or other approved material while answering questions. Note that, students may use Ball point pen, pencil, Calculator etc. as tools to deliver their answers during examination.

HOW ARE EXAMS CONDUCTED IN DISTANCE LEARNING?

In general, all distance learning institutes conduct  internal exams and external exams. Some of the marks are also occupied by assignments that students submit via email or Live Video or LMS (Learning Management System). The students can give internal examinations from any particular location. However, examination centers are allotted for external exams.

3. WHAT IS APEL?

APEL is the accreditation of prior experiential learning, that is, the award of credit for learning based on prior experience — from work, community or volunteer experience, Lifelong learning — which has not previously been assessed and/or awarded credit by any academic institution or college or University”.

COURSE CREDIT OR COURSE EXEMPTION: ” If you have previous studies or professional experience that is relevant to your current academic program, you can request to receive course credit or an exemption based on your prior learning. Course credit (also known as status) can be granted as either specified (where the prior learning is considered equivalent to a specific GEPEA course) or unspecified (where the prior learning is not considered equivalent to a specific GEPEA course). Unspecified credit may be approved to count towards a major or minor, or towards the elective component of a program.”

COURSE EXEMPTIONS: “An exemption may be granted for a course, rather than credit if you can demonstrate that you have learned and understand the content of that course through previous study or professional experience. Course exemptions are usually only granted for compulsory courses and those which form a prerequisite for other courses.”

Grading scale

The GEPEA’s Grading Scale applies to all preparatory, undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate, Professional PhD courses offered at GEPEA.

The table below compares the letter grade, GPA value and marks awarded.

GRADE GPA VALUE MARKS
A+ 9 90-100
A 8 85-89.9
A- 7 80-84.9
B+ 6 75-79.9
B 5 70-74.9
B- 4 65-69.9
C+ 3 60-64.9
C 2 55-59.9
C- 1 50-54.9
D 0 40-49.9
E -1 0-39.9

Grades A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C and C- are all passing grades. Grades D and E are fail grades.

You may also see other grades on your transcript/marksheet as shown below:

NON-NUMERICAL GRADE GPA VALUE DEFINITION
P n/a Pass
F n/a Fail
S n/a Special pass
R Restricted pass #
X -3 Dishonesty
I n/a Incomplete*

How to calculate a Grade Point Average

A GPA (grade point average) is calculated by multiplying the grade point achieved by the number of points for the course. the multiplied figures are then added together, and divided by the total number of points and the grade point value is mapped back to a letter grade.

COURSES CREDIT VALUE OF THE COURSE GRADE GRADE POINT VALUE GRADE POINT X COURSE CREDIT POINTS ACHIEVED
MGMT100 15 points A- 7 7 points x 15 credits 105
GEOG205 15 points C+ 3 3 points x 15 credits 45
LAWS203 30 points A+ 9 9 points x 30 credits 270
LAWS206 30 points B- 4 4 points x 30 credits 120

To calculate the GPA (grade point average) for the courses:

TOTAL CREDIT VALUE FOR THE COURSES STUDIED
(15+15+30+30)
TOTAL GRADE POINT ACHIEVED
(105+45+270+120)
TOTAL GRADE POINTS DIVIDED BY TOTAL CREDIT VALUE AVERAGE GRADE POINTS
90 540 540/90 6 or B+

The GPA is often used as:

  • entry criteria into a higher level of study (i.e. Professional Undergraduate, Honours, Masters, Doctoral Degree).
On the other hand, if you are studying a qualification which can be awarded with Honours or Distinction, this is likely to be awarded using specific criteria and/or with differing weightings. For instance,

A typical Masters Degree and Doctoral Levels will be graded using four terms:

  • Distinction: a final grade of 70% or above
  • Merit: a final grade of 60-69%
  • Pass: a final grade of 50-59%
  • Borderline pass/Fail: a final grade of 40-49%

This table illustrates approximately how the two different grading systems can be compared:

Percentage

Bachelors Degree Grade

Masters Degree Grade

70%+

1st

Distinction

60-69%

2.1

Merit

50-59%

2.2

Pass

40-49%

3rd

Fail/borderline pass

When GEPEA University Evaluate Credits Transfers then differently if we measure Distinction and Divisions then it will be computed as follows:
– Distinction: 75% and above
– 1st Division: Between 60% and 74%
– 2nd Division: Between 50% and 59%
– 3rd Division: Between 40% and 49%

GRADE DEFINITIONS:
AF = Absent Fail
AW = Academic Withdrawal
CM = Competent with Merit
DN = Distinction
HD = High Distinction
CN = Not yet competent
CO = Competent
CR = Credit
EC = Enrollement Continuing
